Create Your Own Global Music Project Event In Your Area!

Make a difference and help Global Music Project by creating your own event. We'll show you how!

Phase 1: Brainstorming

a) Location. Gather a friend or two (or more) and brainstorm about what type of event(s) you'd like to have. A dinner party? A bar night? A club event? Or even an outdoor festival perhaps.

b) Volunteers. Who else might like to help you with the event? Do you have any Microsoft contacts? (Microsoft donates $17/hr to GMP when their full-time employees volunteer!) Check here to see if you have a GMP Facebook page for your area. Ask your friends to volunteer to help coordinate your event(s). Maybe you can find a local organization that provides volunteers for events. Or, maybe you don't even need any volunteers for your event.

c) Talent. Do you know any artists or other types of performers who would like to play at the event? Search Facebook and Global Music Project. You can also search MySpace and other sources for available talent. Maybe you'd like to have something different, such as airialists, bellydancers, Scotish bagpipes, poets, burlesque dancers, magicians, etc.

Phase 2: Planning

a) Where/when. Explore where you might like to have the event and select a venue in your area and contact them. If you decide on a bar or club, tell the manager or owner that you'd like to do a benefit show for Global Music Project (a non-profit arts organization) at their venue. Let them know that you'll be donating the money to charity (Global Music Project) and that possibly some of the money will go to a local charity as well (if you decide to do so), and see if they'll let you have the event there at no charge. They can keep most or all of the bar/drinks money (unless they'll agree to donate a dollar or so per drink sold :-) Try to get a night of the week when you can most likely get a crowd there. This will help determine the exact date for the event.

b) Promotion. Once the event is confirmed and you have a date and location, announce the event to your mailing list and/or Facebook friends, along with any other social networks you wish to add. You can create an event page on facebook specifically for your event and invite your friends very easily. If you know any promoters that can help you make the event a bigger success, then by all means, enlist their help! They may have a mailing list of their own with which they can send out an announcement. They also might want to invite sponsors in to sponsor the show - you know, beer/liquor companies, etc

c) Performers. Contact the talent. Let them know that they'll be performing for free, but potentially be receiving some great exposure. Ask them if they'll promote the event to their mailing list/Facebook friends and fans. etc. Please include our web address ("www.globalmusicproject.org") on all of the announcements. Be sure also to let us know so we can announce it on our front page!

d) PR. As it is a benefit show, you can now submit it to various event calendars in your area - your newspaper, plus local radio and TV stations. You could even write and send out a press release re: the event to your local media (print, radio, TV, web), please include "www.globalmusicproject.org". We'll help you if you like!

e) Advertising. Contact your local print publications and see if they'll create and publish a display ad for free to advertise the event. Be sure they know it's for charity and again, please include our web address ("www.globalmusicproject.org") in the ad.

f) Word of mouth. Tell everyone you know about the show and invite them there!

Phase 3: The Event!

a) Donations. Have a donation jar or people that you trust go around and ask people to donate to the cause. It's important that money is raised.

b) Thank You! Thank people for coming. Also be sure to thank your performers, sponsors (if any), and your volunteers. If you like, say a few words about Global Music Project (and that they should check out the website) along with whatever else you'd like to say.

c) Have fun! Enjoy your event! And don't forget to relax and mingle.

10) Make sure the booking agent and/or promoter gets us the money made from the show. They can either pay us via PayPal (here) or simply send us a check to Global Music Project, PO Box 30869, Seattle WA 98113.

That's it! It's a win-win proposition. You and other artists will receive exposure for your event on our front page and likely, free publicity and advertising in your local media publications. You'll be playing in front of a bigger crowd than usual and attract potential new fans and possibly some music industry folks to your event. And you'll help raise money for a worthy cause!
